A seafarer's identity card or a seafarer's passport - belongs to identity documents. However, this document is quite specific.
CONSULTATION WHAT IS A SEAMAN'S PASSPORT AND WHAT A SEAMAN'S PASSPORT GIVES
Most seamen who work on international flights have a seaman's passport. Usually, a seafarer's identity card is required from them by their employer - a foreigner. However, the absence of a seafarer's passport is not always an obstacle to work at sea, since the presence or absence of a seafarer's passport does not in any way affect a person's belonging to the maritime profession. A seaman's passport, by analogy with a foreign passport, is a "transport" document, that is, a document that gives the right to cross the borders of other states. However, unlike a foreign passport, with a seafarer's passport, you cross the border of countries without obtaining any visas, provided that you cross the border as part of the crew of a sea vessel. That is, having a seafarer's passport does not mean that a citizen of Ukraine can fly to the USA for a private visit without a visa. A seafarer's passport is required for those persons whose ships enter the ports of more than 1 country with which Ukraine has a visa regime.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO GET A SEAMAN'S PASSPORT
This question is very relevant, because often people, wanting to start their career as a sailor, believe that the first and only step to this is to get a sailor's passport. We have already noted above that the seafarer's certificate is a specific document, so the applicant must meet certain requirements:
- be a citizen of Ukraine and a resident of Ukraine (persons who have left Ukraine on PMP cannot be applicants) or
- be a foreigner, but have the status of a resident of Ukraine (that is, have a permanent passport in Ukraine)
- get a maritime education (high school graduation diploma in a maritime specialty) or
- get a maritime specialty (administrator's certificate, for example)
- complete safety courses for all seafarers (BZHS certificate)
- have a registered seafarer's electronic account
WHERE TO GET A SEAMAN'S PASSPORT
A seafarer's license is issued by the captaincy of seaports of Ukraine if there is a corresponding list of documents. Relevant certificates, in particular, you can get a NBJS certificate at training centers for sailors.
WHAT IS A SEAMAN'S PASSPORT
A seafarer's passport is issued in the form of a blue booklet, visually similar to the old-style passport of Ukraine. The first page of the sea passport contains the owner's personal data: full name, date and place of birth, photo, as well as information about the port that issued the sea passport, the validity period of the seafarer's passport, and the certificate number. Most of the following pages are dedicated to entering information about the seafarer's employment: name of the ship, position, dates of employment and dismissal, signature of the owner of the company.
The last page is reserved for entering information about height, eye color and the presence of special features. A seafarer's passport is issued for a period of 5 years with the possibility of its extension for another 5 years. It is possible to extend a seafarer's passport for 5 years from the date of expiry of the document or from the date of application, if the person applied for the extension of the seafarer's passport before its expiry.
For example, if in 2022 you applied to extend a seafarer's license that expired in 2020, then the deadline for renewing your seafarer's passport will be until 2025. Accordingly, if the seafarer's passport expires in 2023, and an extension is applied for in 2022, the extension period will be 2027.

A seafarer's passport (or seafarer's identity card, "seafarer's book") is an official document that certifies the identity of a person who has the right to work at sea and cross the borders of other states. The advantage of having this document is that a seafarer does not need to obtain a visa to cross the state border of a foreign country.
A seafarer's identity card (passport) must be obtained by citizens working on a vessel calling at the ports of more than 1 country with which Ukraine has a visa regime.
How to obtain a seafarer's passport. Time for obtaining a seafarer's passport
Main categories of persons who can obtain a seafarer's passport
- Officers and crew members of passenger ships (captains, navigators, engineers, mechanics, marine engineers, etc.)
- Persons with maritime professions: radio operators, cooks, stewards, ship's doctors and other specialists working on ships and other maritime facilities.
- Students of maritime academies and colleges can obtain a seafarer's passport for internships on ships.
- Professionals who have already obtained a higher maritime education or a maritime specialty (e.g., an administrator certificate).
To obtain a seafarer's passport, you must be:
- a citizen of Ukraine, a resident (a person who has left Ukraine for permanent residence cannot apply for a seafarer's identity card);
- or a foreigner with the status of a resident of Ukraine (i.e. a person who has a permanent residence permit in Ukraine).
A person applying for a seafarer's passport must register in the mobile application "Seafarer's Electronic Cabinet" (Digital media management INC). This online service provides assistance to seafarers in the process of paperwork and enables them to enjoy all the benefits of digital document management.
