Registration for NMT-2026: how an identification code can become an obstacle to admission

The 2026 college admissions process has officially begun, and with it, the acceptance of applications for the National Multidisciplinary Test has also started. The main registration period ended in early April, but applicants still have a “second chance.” An additional registration period will run from May 11 to 16 for those who, due to extenuating circumstances, were unable to submit their documents earlier.

This year’s testing locations are quite extensive: the main exams will be administered in nearly 50 cities across 30 countries, and additional testing sessions will be available in 11 countries. This allows Ukrainian applicants currently residing abroad to fully participate in the admissions process.

List of required documents for applicants

To successfully create a personal account and register for the test, prospective students must prepare a package of scanned copies:

  • Identification: internal passport, ID card, or valid foreign passport.
  • Educational document: high school diploma or an official certificate from the educational institution (if the student is graduating this year).
  • Tax ID number (RNOKPP): taxpayer registration card or an official note in the passport stating that no such number is available.

A critical detail: why is the TIN becoming a problem?

For many families, the requirement to provide a tax identification number comes as an unpleasant surprise when they upload their documents. Without a tax ID number, the registration system simply won’t process the application. The problem becomes more acute if the applicant is outside Ukraine, as the procedure for obtaining this document has its own nuances.

Currently, there are three main ways to obtain a TIN:

  1. In-person visit: personally visiting a Taxpayer Service Center (TSC) within Ukraine.
  2. Digital method: using an electronic signature in the taxpayer’s personal account (requires a digital signature certificate and a bank account in Ukraine).
  3. Legal representation: obtaining the document through a professional attorney or a representative acting under a power of attorney.
