VISA REGIME BETWEEN UKRAINE AND RUSSIA FROM JULY 1, 2022

Since March 10, 1997, citizens of Ukraine and citizens of russia have freely crossed the borders of both states using the visa-free regime, which was established by the Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the russian federation on visa-free travel of citizens of Ukraine and citizens of the russian federation dated January 16, 1997. With the beginning of the full-scale war of russia against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, a proposal was made to review the validity of this Agreement. Entry of citizens of the russian federation into Ukraine from February 24, 2022 was practically impossible, with some exceptions, regardless of whether a person has a temporary or permanent residence permit in Ukraine or is even waiting to receive Ukrainian citizenship. Accordingly, on June 17, 2022, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted a resolution on the cancellation of this Agreement in order to ensure the security and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

From now on, more precisely from July 1, 2022, citizens of the russian federation who wish to enter the territory of Ukraine must obtain a Ukrainian visa at foreign diplomatic institutions of Ukraine. At the same time, no official countermeasures from the russian government have yet been announced.

We will remind that in recent years, russians were also prohibited from crossing the border of Ukraine with internal passports, when crossing the border they had to present their passports for travelling abroad.
