What do the numbers of your identification number (RNOKPP/IPN) mean: decoding and meaning

An identification number is a unique digital code that every citizen of Ukraine encounters almost every day. We indicate it when opening bank accounts, issuing powers of attorney, getting a job, buying real estate or receiving foreign services. Officially, this document is called the Registration Number of the Taxpayer Account Card (RNOKPP), although in everyday life it has become known by its old name - TIN (individual tax number).

Few people know that these 10 digits are not a random set of numbers, but clearly encrypted personal information. In this material, we will analyze in detail what data about you is hidden in the tax code, how to check its correctness and what to do if you need an official certificate with legalization to submit documents abroad. If you need urgent registration, renewal or certification of tax documents for foreign institutions, the lawyers of the Enwolt company will perform the entire procedure on a turnkey basis - details are available on the page - Identification code for citizens of Ukraine.

The structure of the RNOKPP: how to decipher the 10 digits of the tax code

Each digit in your identification number corresponds to a specific parameter in the State Register of Individuals - Taxpayers. Let's consider the structure of the code using the example of the conditional number 2983411235.

1. The first 5 digits are your date of birth

The first five numbers are the exact mathematical code of your date of birth. They show the number of days that have passed from January 1, 1900 to the day you were born.

  • Example: If the first digits are 29834, this means that 29,834 days have passed since the beginning of the 20th century until your birthday, which corresponds to September 7, 1981.

2. The next 4 digits (6th, 7th, 8th and 9th) - serial number and gender

This block directly describes you and your card number in the DPS database:

  • 6th, 7th and 8th digits: Serial number of the registration of a person who was born on the same day as you.
  • 9th digit - gender of the person: It is the most interesting, as it clearly indicates your gender:
    • If the 9th digit is ODD (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) - the code belongs to a man.
    • If the 9th digit is EVEN (2, 4, 6, 8, 0) - the code belongs to a woman.

3. 10th digit - check digit

The last digit is a mathematical control key. It is calculated using a special algorithm (using weighting factors for the first 9 digits) and is needed so that tax authorities, banks and electronic systems (in particular, "Diya") can instantly detect typographical errors when entering the number.

Why is the TIN often required abroad?

When applying for visas, obtaining a residence permit (VZH), opening a business or bank accounts in the European Union, foreign authorities seek to verify the legal and financial integrity of the applicant. The TIN is the main identifier of your tax history in Ukraine.

Popular problems with the tax number and their solutions

  1. Changing the surname after marriage: When changing the surname, the 10-digit number itself remains unchanged for life, but the certificate is subject to mandatory replacement, since the text part must correspond to the new passport name.
  2. Loss of a paper card: If you are abroad, obtaining a duplicate of a taxpayer card in Ukraine on your own can be difficult due to bureaucratic procedures.
  3. Errors in the code: It is extremely rare, but there are cases when the code was generated incorrectly due to a failure in the date or gender. This requires legal support to make changes to the DTS registers.
